How ADA Accessible is Camp?
The camp property is 325 forested acres. The walkways around main camp are wide graveled roads and paths. There is moderate to significant inclines to some program spaces and cottages.
Mobility aids are of course permitted, and cars, motorcycles, ATVs or other vehicles are not permitted to be driven around camp. Campers can temporarilty drive vehicles to cottages to unload luggage, then immediately return vehicles to the parking lot.
All cottages are single-level and one has no steps to enter. The Cascara House has no steps to enter the building and two bedrooms is on the first floor.
We are aware of a couple resources in the area that rent mobility scooters and all-terrain chairs; Mobility Northwest in Salem and Hilyard Community Center in Eugene. Glimmer Camp is not able to coordinate rental or transportation of equipment.
We do not have volunteers to assist campers with personal support. Campers must be able to manage thier own personal care, belongings, and needs while at camp.
If you have any questions or concerns about access needs, please contact us at registration@glimmercamp.com at least 30 days prior to camp. We're enthusiastic to work collaboratively with folks to address access needs within our availble resources.
Sensory Information
The site is a 325 acre Pacific forested property. You can expect sensory experiences associated with the outdoor environment including weather, bugs, and ambient sounds. The property is large enough that most activities and experiences will not be 'crowded'. And, participants are empowered to self-select in to and out of activities and environments according to what feels right for them.
Meals will be served in the Dining Hall and there will be up to 55 campers sharing that space during those times. Some self directed, small group, and All Camp activities will take place in John Gray Hall which is a large hall with a gymnasium and stage. Sound may echo in John Gray Hall. There is a seperate room in John Gray Hall that will be designated for more 'chill' and sensory sensitive activities.
COVID
We ask everyone to take the precautionary measures of having the most recent vaccine (if able), and limiting expose prior to camp. Participants are not permitted to attend camp if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or having been exposed to anyone with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19. All participants must attest to not experience COVID-19 symptoms or being exposed to anyone with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19. See Camp Waiver for details.
We do not require masking, and we encourage and support each participant in taking the precautions that feel right for them. All participants are expected to respect the boundaries set by others. Choices for personal protection will be enthusiastically supported at camp. We plan to have a limited supply of masks and rapid COVID-19 tests available at camp.
The Dining Hall, John Gray Hall, Cascara House, and Cottages are all indoors. Meals are served in the Dining Hall. Doors and windows can be opened to promote air flow and campers are welcome to sit at tables on the patio outside. We will have HEPA air filters running in the lodge during meal times.
Is there a 'camp nurse'?
There will be first aid certified volunteers during camp. All participants are responsible for their own health and safety during camp. First aid volunteers will be available to assist with minor injuries. First aid kits will be available throughout the property, and there is an AED located in the Dining Hall. Campers are responsible for the safe keeping of, and access to, personal medication while at camp. Emergency Rooms and Urgent Care are located 10 miles away in Salem.
Is there a 'mental health nurse'?
There is not. Our ethose leans into community care, abolotion, and transformative justice and so we resist pedestaling certain people, including the leadership team, to provide mental health support. Instead we lean into self agency, peer support, and community care. Before and during camp, campers will be provided a Self Care and Safety Plan template, information on offering peer support, and resources to support during a conlict to support the development and practice of individual skills and collective capacity.
Security
While we can't guarantee that the specific location of camp will remain private, we do not publish location specifics on our public pages, instead sending campers the address after registration. We have rented a private property and have exclusive use of it. The only other people on the property are property staff. Glimmer Camp does not have 'security guards' and we have established and practiced emergency procedures and volunteers skilled in deescalation.
State Agents
Summer Camp is held on private property, so federal agents are not permitted to enter without a warrant. Engaging the police is not in any of Glimmer Camp's emergency proceedures. We know that the police do not make us safe. And, we are not the owners of the property and so we do not have control of whether the property manager calls the police. If we become aware that police are called, for any reason, we will make best effort to alert all campers.
